“Fractography in Aircraft Failure Analysis”
Włodzimierz Karliński
pages: 60
Warszawa 2012
The book contains information that is based on more than forty years of experience and expert’s examinations ot aviation equipment, ranging from minor damage to plane crashes, the author considered it important to those who carry out the fractographic surveys. Nevertheless, the book should not be regarded as a textbook of fractography, because every case of damage or destruction requires an individual approach. The information contained in the book can be very useful in the stage of the preparation of research programs and in formulating hypotheses about the causes and course of cracking. The book consists of introduction, which relates to operations prior to the study of fractures, including completing the technical and performance requirements and provides guidelines for the collection, storage and preparation of damaged parts to the study. Part Two-macrofractographic-examination is an essential part of the book, since about 90% of the information necessary to determine the cause and course of destruction is obtained with the naked eye observation of fracture or a small magnification. Fracture characteristics are discussed and their relationship to the types of loads and working conditions. Quoted examples of quantitative analysis of the destruction process. The third part summarizes basic information about the microscopic characteristics of fractures, revealed by electron microscopy.
